Course Description
Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. Taught in Spanish.

Course Reflection Narrative
Through readings and in-class discussions, we learned about translation theory in Spanish 315 and gained a concept of communicative translation by contrasting it to a direct work for word translation. In this course, we also learnt the pre-translation process that a translator goes through and how they gear up for it. We taught how to use tools to identify the right term when translating and how the dialect to focus on depends on the place you are translating from. Our focus in this lesson was on providing a thorough understanding of the interpretation while translating books and magazines from Spanish to English and vice versa. In addition, we learnt about the various translations that can be used to translate a text, including word-for-word translation, adaptation translation, and pragmatic translation. By taking examinations and using the fundamentals of the translation tools we studied in this semester, we were able to demonstrate our growth and grasp of translation. During the semester we also went over the terms of both medical and business because these two fields are a big necessity in the world. We covered how to properly translate as if we were translators or interpreters in these situations. Many of the videos that we would watch in class were very informative and they really showed how stressful and overwhelming being a translator is. This was really eye opening for me because I want to become a translator after graduating but it has not changed my mind though.
