Service Learning
I completed my service learning hours fall 2022 at the Food Bank for Monterey County. I was able to support you and my community through the Food Bank of Monterey County. The Monterey County Food Bank is based in Salinas, California, and supplies emergency pantries and meal programs run by more than 160 nonprofit local human service groups in addition to operating more than 70 weekly direct distribution sites. One in three children and one in four county residents are served by the Monterey County Food Bank. These programs are made particularly to combat hunger, but they are also made to address the nutritional issues that our community faces because of the wide range of clientele they serve, including growing children, elderly people, veterans, and the homeless. I was able to contribute to helping those in need in our community, despite the fact that I was unable to fully grow and immerse myself in the Spanish language and culture. Additionally, I think I now have a better grasp of what it means to give back to my community and volunteer; it was incredibly motivating. I packed dry goods, canned goods, fruits, and other items for needy households. Due to the fact that it was close to the holidays, people and families received more gifts than normal. For instance, on Thanksgiving, families received turkeys as well as Hawaiian style bread, canned goods to go with the feast, and more. I was able to establish relationships with the other volunteers, staff members, and residents of my community by giving back to it. I appreciate the chance I was given to volunteer at The Food Bank of Monterey County.
