MLOs (Major Learning Outcomes)
MLO 3: LITERARY AND CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE
Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) of Hispanic societies.
There are two pathways by which this outcome can be fulfilled:
Students complete four courses in Hispanic literature and/or Hispanic culture. These courses deal with the cultures and civilizations of Spain or Hispanic America, the literatures of Spain and/or Hispanic America, The theatre and cinema of Spain and/or Hispanic America, the art and art history of Spain and /or Hispanic America, the music and music history of Spain and/or Hispanic America, the historical, political and social development of Spain and/or Hispanic America.

MLO 3
SPAN 304
SPAN 316
SPAN 362
SPAN 301S
In order to meet this MLO, students gain a fair comprehension of the mental models (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, and philosophies), behavioral patterns (patterns of social interactions), and cultural outputs (such as art, history, literature, and music) of Hispanic cultures. When looking over at the courses that I took there are four courses that embodied the spirit of cultural knowledge: SPAN 304 (Intro to Hispanic Literature), SPAN 316 (Spanish Culture and Civilization), SPAN 362 (Latin American Literature in Literature), and SPAN 301S (Service Learning in the Latino Community). These classes immersed us in literature while also educating us on the various cultural facets of some works of literature. One example can be how we analyzed how a poem is structured and composed in SPAN 304 and by doing this I was part of a group that picked a poem to give a presentation on. Another course that pertains to cultural studies is SPAN 316 and in this course we focused on the beginning of Spain and all the events that have contributed to its current state. One weekly task that really helped me in my studies is that we wrote reflections that allowed us to recollect all the information we covered. In SPAN 362 every week we had different reading assignments that we later covered in class. For example, one reading that I really enjoyed interpreting and researching was “Juan Darien” by Horacio Quiroga. One final class that relates to cultural knowledge was Span 301S and out of all the courses I took this one was really fun to be a part of. The main goal for this course was to complete service learning hours at a site which allowed us to gain more knowledge on how a community functions on a daily basis. By the end of the course we needed to present on our site and to share to the class all the different activities we carried out there. This course allowed me to view the different aspects of the hispanic communities and learn from these experiences. Through these courses, I was able to deepen my understanding of literature and culture, specifically through my examination of works of literature that draw on the cultures of the places and eras in which they were written. Plus I had the opportunity to be a part of a service site that let me learn a lot more about how a community works. Some challenges do remain after completing these courses. For example after taking SPAN 362 my ability to read and analyze different types of literature is not my strongest forte, but I am certain it has improved since I began.
